EORI number – what it is and how to apply

If your company imports or exports goods outside the EU you need an EORI number. It's a cornerstone of all customs handling – and luckily simple and free to obtain. Here's everything you need to know.

What is an EORI number?

EORI stands for Economic Operators Registration and Identification. It's a unique identifier for businesses trading with countries outside the EU, used by customs authorities across the union.

Your company has a single EORI number valid in all EU countries. In Sweden it's based on the organisation number.

When do you need it?

You need an EORI number as soon as you import or export goods to or from a country outside the EU – for example Norway, the United Kingdom, the USA or China.

For trade within the EU no EORI number is required. Private individuals normally don't need one – it's for companies and businesses.

How to apply

You apply free of charge with the customs authority via their e-service. The application is simple and the number is often issued quickly.

If you already have an EORI number you don't need to apply again – it stays valid. If you're unsure whether you have one, we'll help you check.

EORI after Brexit

Since the United Kingdom left the EU, UK trade counts as trade outside the union. That means you need an EORI number for export and import to and from the UK too – something many missed after Brexit.
